How to Balance Vata Dosha in Fall

Updated: Sep 4

The fall season is the season of increased Vata (Ether and Air Element) in our body, mind and emotions. The qualities/gunas of Vata dosha gain power and can create imbalances. Knowing these gunas and preparing ahead for the upcoming season will help you manage your body mind and emotions.

Vata works on the principle of movement. This movement is not limited to physical motion but also a speed in your thoughts and emotions. This "Chala" aspect of Vata could motivate you to go out for a run but could also cause restlessness, scattered focus, and difficulty staying grounded. When Vata increases beyond its natural balance, it can manifest as dryness of the skin, irregular digestion, disturbed sleep, anxiety, or a sense of being “ungrounded.”

The gunas (qualities) of Vata that become more pronounced in fall are:

  • Ruksha (Dryness) – leading to dry skin, hair, lips, and even brittle nails.

  • Laghu (Lightness) – which may support agility but can also result in weakness or light sleep.

  • Chala (Mobility/Instability) – bringing creativity and flow but also worry or overthinking.

  • Sheeta (Coldness) – lowering warmth in the body and slowing digestion.

By recognizing these qualities early, you can prepare your body and mind with routines and practices that counterbalance them—favoring warmth, oiliness, stability, and nourishment.

In our ayurvedic consulting practice at Vedic Edge, we can help you create a daily routine to leverage the qualities of Vata and add to your daily routine (Dinacharya) so that you stay focused and balanced. We will educate you and guide you to enjoy fall by taking care of your health holistically.
